Os artistas (plásticos) representados em "As Áfricas de Pancho Guedes"

1. Moçambicanos e portugueses

Abdias Júlio Muhlanga, ou Muchanga, n.1940, Gaza. Frequentou o curso nocturno de Pintura Decorativa na Escola Industrial, enquanto trabalhava como pintor de automóveis. Pancho Guedes (P.G.) incluiu-o na exposição que levou em 1962 ao 1º Congresso Internacional de Cultura Africana, em Salisbúria – com Malangatana, Alberto Mati, Augusto Naftal e Metine Macie (que foi servente e também aluno no Núcleo de Arte – na colecção subsiste uma obra em mau estado de conservação). Foi o autor, escolhido em concurso, do cartaz das festas da cidade de Lourenço Marques (L.M.) também em 62. Participou em 1964 numa mostra do Núcleo de Estudantes Secundários Africanos de Moçambique (NESAM) e foi preso pouco depois, permanecendo na cadeia vários anos. Voltou a pintar e a expor depois de 1975.

Alberto Chissano, n. 1935, Chicavane, Manjacaze; f. 1994. Frequentou o Núcleo de Arte (N.A.), primeiro como servente, começou a expor em 1966 no 1º Salão de Arte Moderna, onde Jorge Nhaka foi o escultor premiado. Esteve representado em 1969 na mostra "Contemporary African Art" no Camden Art Centre, Londres (o primeiro panorama internacional de arte africana na Europa), ao lado de Malangatana, Valente Mahumana Mankew e do também escultor Munidawu Oblino Mabyaba - ou Mundau Oblino Mabjaia (Magaia, Mabyaya). Criou o Museu Galeria Alberto Chissano na cidade da Matola.

Alberto Mati foi empregado no atelier de Pancho Guedes, que apresentou os seus desenhos, alguns deles bordados, no Congresso de 1962 (ver Abdias).

Álvaro Passos, n. 1934, Inhambane; f. 6 Novembro 2010, Portugal* (*actualização). Formou-se no N.A. e fez a 1ª individual em 1962. Premiado em 1965 no Salão de Artes Plásticas das Festas da Cidade. Viveu e trabalhou em Portugal depois de 1975. (Wikipedia)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Amaro é certamente Rui Amaro, presente na exposição "Pinturas", colectiva de alunos do Núcleo, ou seja, da Escola de João Ayres, em 1958, prefaciada por José Blanc de Portugal, também com Zé Júlio e Álvaro Passos. O Edifício Capitania, em estilo colonial do tempo da arquitectura do ferro, junto à Fortaleza, foi demolido nos anos 50.

Antero Machado, n. 1934, em L.M. Foi aluno de Frederico Ayres no N.A. e estreou-se em 1949 na 1ª Exposição Geral de Artes Plásticas. Foi pintor, decorador, ilustrador. Nos anos 60 fixou-se na África do Sul, onde em 1983 foi um dos fundadores do TAM, Tertúlia de Artistas Moçambicanos /Tertulia of Mozambican Artists. O Restaurante Zambi e os pavilhões de exposição anexos foram construídos em 1956 por ocasião da visita do Presidente Craveiro Lopes, com projecto de P.G., também autor de três painéis murais que subsistem muito alterados.

António Quadros, n. 1933, Viseu; f. 1994, Santiago de Besteiros, Tondela. Curso de Pintura, no Porto. Entre 1964 e 1984 viveu em Moçambique. Ganhou em 1965 os primeiros prémios de pintura e desenho e o Grande Prémio do Salão de Artes Plásticas por ocasião das Festas da Cidade, organizado pelo N.A. (Ver António Quadros. O Sinaleiro das Pombas, ed. Árvore, Porto 2001.)

Augusto Naftal era um muito jovem artista a quem PG foi adquirindo inúmeros desenhos e que  apresentou no Congresso de 62 (ver Abdias).

B. J. Sande seria criado de mesa em L.M. O quadro foi adquirido numa loja de mobiliário.

Bertina Lopes, n. 1924 em L.M. Estudou nas Escolas António Arroio e de Belas Artes, em Lisboa, ensinou desenho em L.M. de 1953 a 61; foi bolseira da Fundação Gulbenkian e reside em Itália desde 1963. Retrospectiva na F.G. em 1993. Pormenores dos desenhos expostos ilustraram a 1ª edição de Nós Matámos o Cão Tinhoso, de Luis Bernardo Honwana, em 1964. ("Para a capa e para ilustrar as histórias aproveitaram-se fragmentos de desenhos que a Bertina tinha feito sem conhecer os meus escritos e que o Pancho usou depois de ver que as coisas que os desenhos contam são parecidas com as histórias que fiz." L.B.H (contracapa da 1ª edição).

Francisco Relógio, n. 1926, Vila Verde de Ficalho, Serpa; f. 1997. Começou no Prémio da Jovem Pintura, Galeria de Março, Lisboa, 1953. Esteve em L.M. em 1963/64 onde realizou um notável mural de 100 por 5 metros, gravado em pedra, na sede do Banco Nacional Ultramarino, depois Banco de Moçambique. Expôs em 1964 na galeria do Café Djambu. Retrospectiva em 1992 na Galeria Municipal da Amadora.

Malangatana Valente Ngwenya, n. 1936, Matalana, Marracuene; f. 5 de Janeiro de 2011, Matosinhos, Portugal* (*actualização). Em 1958, apoiado por Augusto Cabral, começou a frequentar o N.A. Primeira colectiva em 1959 na Casa da Metrópole e 1ª individual em 1961, na Associação dos Organismos Económicos. Em 1962, no nº 10 da revista "Black Orpheus" (Idaban, Nigéria), Julian Beinart dedicou um longo artigo à sua pintura (16 páginas e 15 reproduções) acompanhado por dois poemas. 1º prémio de pintura na Exposição de Artes Plásticas por ocasião das Festas da Cidade em 1964 - nesse ano é preso pela polícia política, durante 18 meses. Em 1968, Ulli Beier no seu livro Contemporary Art in Africa (Pall Mall Press, Londres), confere grande destaque à sua obra (pp. 62-72, 7 ilustrações). Bolseiro da F. Gulbenkian em Portugal, 1971; expôs em Lisboa pela primeira vez em 1972, na Galeria Buchholz e na SNBA. (Ver Malangatana, org. Júlio Navarro, ed. Caminho, Lisboa, 1998)

Pedro Guedes, n. 1948, Joanesburgo, filho de Pancho Guedes. Participou no 1º Concurso de Arte Infantil em Moçambique, patrocinado pelo Núcleo, em 1958. Arquitecto e professor em Brisbane, Austrália.

Pedro Josefa Menge foi um artista que se dedicou aos bordados e à sua oferta comercial. Eram feitos por homens (em especial por soldados) e para auto-consumo, em travesseiros destinados ao enxoval, segundo P.G. Os primeiros filmes de cowboys exibidos ao ar livre tiveram grande impacto no início dos anos 60, e foram um tema frequente de desenhos e bordados.

R. Mabota é um pintor sobre o qual não há informações, mas um outro quadro de 1974 é reproduzido numa tese alemã (Romuald Tchibozo, U. Humboldt, Berlim: L’ART ET L’ARBITRAIRE: Une étude de la réception de l’Art africain contemporain en occident, le cas allemand de 1950 à nos jours.).

Rosa Passos, n. 1900, Porto; f. 1977 em Portugal. Viveu em L.M. de 1919 a 1975. Interessada pelo trabalho do filho (Álvaro), começou a pintar aos 65 anos. Expôs no Salão de Arte Moderna, 1966, e obteve o Prémio de pintura e o Grande Prémio no Salão de Artes Plásticas de 1967. Expôs no Palácio Foz (SNI, Lisboa) em 1970.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Zé Júlio, José Júlio Ferreira, n. 1925, Caldas da Rainha. A partir de 1949 viveu em Moçambique, com a profissão de faroleiro, e desde 1977 reside em Lisboa. Frequentou o curso de desenho e pintura no Núcleo de Arte desde 1957, aluno de João Ayres, e fez a 1ª individual em 1960.

Douglas Portway, n. Johannesburg 1922; f. 1993. Com uma primeira exposição em 1945, participou na Bienal de Veneza em 1956 e no ano seguinte instalou-se na Europa (Ibiza, St. Ives, na Cornualha, Dordogne, etc). Expôs em 1949, na Constantia Galery, Joanesburgo, com Pancho Guedes e Rosalind Hertslet.

 Frank McEwen (1907-1994), artista britânico activo entre a vanguarda parisiense dos anos 30, depois delegado do British Council em Paris, foi o primeiro director da Rhodes National Gallery, Salisbúria (Harare), Rodésia do Sul (Zimbábue), de 1956 a 1973, onde criou a Workshop School e promoveu o movimento da escultura Shona. A colecção que legou ao British Museum não inclui nenhuma obra da sua autoria.

 Isa Kabini, n. 1948, Vlakfontein, Gauteng, África do Sul, é – com Ester Mahlangu e Francine Ndimande - uma das mais importantes artistas cuja obra continua a tradição das pinturas murais dos Ndebele.

Manolis Callyanis, pintor grego amigo de Pancho Guedes, terá vindo para a África de Sul estudar arquitectura e partiu depois para Paris (percurso não localizado).

Tito Zungu (1939-2000), pintor autodidacta desde os anos 1960, viveu como camponês pobre em Mapumulo, KwaZulu-Natal, e trabalhou como cozinheiro em Durban. Primeira exposição individual em 1982 na Wits University Gallery, por iniciativa de Pancho Guedes, foi antes patrocinado por Jo Thorpe, do African Art Centre, e exposto pela Durban Art Gallery. Teve uma retrospectiva em Durban em 1997, e foi integrado desde 1990 nas grandes representações da África do Sul (Bienal de Veneza em 1993).

Biographical notes

1. Artists from Mozambique and Portugal

Abdias Júlio Muhlanga, or Muchanga, (b.1940, Gaza). Muhlanga attended decorative painting night classes at Escola Industrial, while working as a car painter. Pancho Guedes included him in the exhibition that he took to the First International Congress of African Culture in Salisbury in 1962 – along with Malangatana, Alberto Mati, Augusto Naftal and Metine Macie (who was a servant, and a student at the Núcleo de Arte – one of his works in poor condition can be found in the collection). He was responsible for the Lourenço Marques city festival poster, which was selected in competition (also in 1962). In 1964, he participated in a Nucleus of African Secondary School Students from Mozambique exhibition, being arrested shortly after, remaining in prison for several years. After 1975, he went back to being a painter and exhibiting his art.

Alberto Chissano, (b.1935, Chicavane, Manjacaze; d. 1994). Chissano attended the Núcleo de Arte, first as a servant, and started exhibiting in 1966 at the first Salão of Modern Art, where Jorge Nhaka was the award-winning sculptor. In 1969, his work was exhibited at the Contemporary African Art show at the Camden Art Centre, London (the first international panorama of African art in Europe), alongside Malangatana, Valente Mahumana Mankew and the sculptor Munidawu Oblino Mabyaba - Mundau Oblino Mabjaia (Magaia, Mabyaya). He founded the Alberto Chissano Museum Gallery in the city of Matola.

Alberto Mati worked at the atelier of Pancho Guedes, who presented his drawings, some of them embroidered, at the 1962 Congress (see Abdias).

Álvaro Passos, (b. 1934, Inhambane - f. 6 Novembro 2010). Passos trained at the Núcleo de Arte and had his first solo show in 1962. He received an award in 1965 at the Plastic Arts Salão at the City Festival. He has lived and worked in Portugal since 1975.

Amaro is certainly Rui Amaro, who featured at the exhibition ”Paintings”, a collective show of students from the Núcleo de Arte, in other words, from the João Ayres School, in 1958, presented by José Blanc de Portugal, alongside Zé Júlio and Álvaro Passos. The Capitania Buildings near the Fortress, which was built in the colonial style from the iron architecture era, was demolished in 1950s.

Antero Machado, (b. 1934, Lourenço Marques). Antero was a student of Frederico Ayres at the Núcleo de Arte and made his debut in 1949 at the 1st General Exhibition of Plastic Arts. He was a painter, decorator and illustrator. In the 1960s, he settled in South Africa where, in 1983, he was one of the founders of TAM (Tertulia of Mozambican Artists). The Zambi Restaurant was built in 1956 before the visit of President Craveiro Lopes, designed by Pancho Guedes, who was also author of three mural panels that have been much altered since.

António Quadros, (b.1933, Viseu; d.1994, Santiago de Besteiros, Tondela). Quadros graduated in painting in Porto and lived in Mozambique between 1964 and 1984. In 1965, he won the 1st prizes for painting and drawing and the Grand Prix of the Plastic Arts Salon during the City Festival, organized by the Núcleo de Arte (See António Quadros. O Sinaleiro das Pombas, ed. Árvore, Porto 2001.)

Augusto Naftal was a very young artist that Pancho Guedes acquired many drawings from and whom he exhibeted at the Congress of 62 (See Abdias).

B. J. Sande was a waiter in Lourenço Marques. The painting was acquired in a furniture shop.

Bertina Lopes, (b. 1924, Lourenco Marques). Bertina was a students at the António Arroio and Belas Artes schools in Lisbon and teached drawing in Lourenco Marques from 1953 to 1961. She won a scholarship from the Gulbenkian Foundation (F.G.) and has lived in Italy since 1963. In 1993 she had a retrospective at the F.G., in Lisbon. Details of this exhibited drawings illustrated the 1st edition of We Killed Mangy Dog by Luis Bernardo Honwana, in 1964. ("We used fragments of drawings that Bertina had done without knowing my work for the cover and to illustrate the stories. Pancho used these after seeing that the things that the drawings describe resemble the stories I wrote.") L.B.H (back cover of 1^st edition).

Francisco Relógio, (b. 1926, Vila Verde de Ficalho, Serpa; d. 1997). Relógio started at Young's Painting Prize, Galeria de Março, Lisbon, 1953. He was in Lourenco Marques in 1963/64, where he painted a remarkable 100 by 5-metre mural, engraved in stone, at the headquarters of Banco Nacional Ultramarino, later Banco de Moçambique. In 1964, he exhibited at the Café Djambu gallery. He had a retrospective at the Amadora Municipal Gallery in 1992.

Malangatana Valente Ngwenya, (b. 1936, Matalana, Marracuene - d. 5 January 2011, Matosinhos, Portugal*). In 1958, with the support of Augusto Cabral, Malangatana started attending Núcleo de Arte. He had his first collective exhibition in 1959 at Casa da Metrópole and his 1^st solo exhibition in 1961 at the Associação dos Organismos Económicos. In 1962, in the 10th issue of the magazine "Black Orpheus" (Idaban, Nigeria), Julian Beinart dedicated a long article to his painting (16 pages and 15 reproductions) accompanied by two poems. He won 1^st prize for painting at the Plastic Arts Exhibition during the City Festival in 1964 – in the same year, he was arrested by the political police and served 18 months. In 1968, in his book Contemporary Art in Africa (Pall Mall Press, London), Ulli Beier gave major focus to his work (pgs. 62-72, 7 illustrations). He gained a Gulbenkian Foundation scholarship in Portugal, in 1971, and exhibited in Lisbon for the first time in 1972, at the Buchholz Gallery and SNBA. (See Malangatana, org. by Júlio Navarro, ed. Pedro Guedes, (b. 1948, Johannesburg). Pancho Guedes’s son. Participated in the 1st Children's Art Competition in Mozambique, sponsored by the Núcleo de Arte in 1958. Architect and teacher in Brisbane, Australia.

Pedro Josefa Menge was an artist whose work focussed on embroidery and its commercialisation. Embroidery was produced by men (especially soldiers) and for internal consumption, for pillows for the trousseaus of would-be-brides, according to Pancho Guedes. A common theme used in drawings and embroidery was that of cowboys and westerns, due to the major impact that this genre had in outdoor screenings in the early '60s.

R. Mabota is a painter about whom there is no information; however there other picture from 1974 that is reproduced in a German thesis (Romuald Tchibozo, U. Humboldt, Berlin).

Rosa Passos, (b. 1900, Porto; d. 1977 in Portugal). Lived in Lourenço Marques from 1919 to 1975. Interested in her son’s work (Álvaro), she started painting at the age of 65. She exhibited at the Modern Art Salon, in 1966, and was awarded the Painting Prize and the Grand Prix of the Visual Arts Salon of 1967. Passos exhibited at Palácio Foz (SNI, Lisbon) in 1970.

Zé Júlio, José Júlio Ferreira, (b. 1925, Caldas da Rainha). Júlio moved to Mozambique in 1949, where he worked as a lighthouse keeper. Since 1977, he has lived in Lisbon. He attended the drawing and painting course at the Núcleo de Arte in 1957, and was pupil of João Ayres, having his first solo exhibition in 1960.

2. Other nacionalities

Douglas Portway, b. Johannesburg (1922-1993). His first exhibition took place in 1945. After participating at the Venice Biennale in 1956, he settled in Europe (Ibiza, St. Ives, Cornwall, Dordogne, etc.). In 1949, he had an show at the Constantia Gallery, Johannesburg, with Amâncio Guedes and Rosalind Hertslet.

Frank McEwen (1907-1994), British artist active among the Parisian avant-garde of the 1930s. He later became the British Council delegate in Paris and first director of Rhodes National Gallery in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), between 1956 and 1973, where he founded the Workshop School and promoted the Shona sculpture movement. The collection he bequeathed to the British Museum does not include any sculpture of his own.

Isa Kabini, b. 1948, Vlakfontein, Gauteng, South Africa, is one of the most important artists whose work continues the traditional art of Ndebele mural paintings, alongside Ester Mahlangu and Francine Ndimande.

Manolis Callyanis, Greek painter and friend of Amâncio Guedes, went to South Africa to study architecture, later moving to Paris (unknown career).

Tito Zungu (1939-2000), self-taught painter since the 1960s, he lived as a poor farmer in Mapumulo, KwaZulu-Natal and worked as a cook in Durban. He had his first solo exhibition in 1982 at the Wits University Gallery, on the initiative of Pancho Guedes. Previously, he had been sponsored by Jo Thorpe, from the African Art Centre, and his work was exhibited at the Durban Art Gallery. He had a retrospective in Durban in 1997, and since 1990 his work has been included in virtually all of South Africa’s major representations of art (Venice Biennale in 1993).

Boa Tarde,
Sendo João Ayres o pioneiro da arte Moderna em Moçambique, Mestre de muitos de muitos pintores por si abordados com com exposiçoes internacionais nomeadamente na Africa do Sul e Brasil onde expôs no Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo e nos salões do ministerio da educação e cultura do rio de Janeiro (primeiro pintor português a exibir lá individualmente) e Peça chave de todo o movimento progressista e de arte moderna em Moçambique, Mestre de Malangatana que segundo ele o pòs a pintar. Não teve este o devido relevo na sua Curadoria para as Africas de Pancho Guedes?
A importância deste pintor está bem documentada na Tese da Alda Costa e no consequente livro "Arte em Moçambique"
